Suzuki TU250X: An Excellent Entry-Level Bike

The Suzuki TU250X is a unique and ideal entry-level motorcycle. In its very essence, the Suzuki TU250X is a standard style motorcycle that features classic overtures.

It's not a sportbike, nor is it really a cruiser. It's not an adventure bike either, or a candidate for motocross exercises. It's simply a motorcycle that hearkens back to earlier days and forms of two-wheeled transport. The TU250X may be ridden on- or off-road, though the latter scenario isn't its forte.

At 328 pounds dry weight, the TU250X is light enough for most beginning riders to feel safe and secure when onboard. It isn't overpowered either, but provides sufficient get-up-and-go to be freeway legal and then some.

The Suzuki TU250X brings tradition alive in a simplified motorcycle that displays nostalgic styling cues that include the chrome lace-spoke wheels, single round headlight and low-slung tapered muffler, and despite the bike's traditional design, there's the advancement of the modern, fuel-injected single-cylinder and fuel-efficient Suzuki engine.

Power comes from an electrically started, fuel-injected 249cc SOHC, four-stroke, air-cooled single-cylinder motor that produces strong, low rpm torque, ideal for urban riding. Motive force is delivered to the chain-driven rear wheel via a 5-speed constant-mesh sequential manual gearbox with a wet multi-plate type clutch that's suitable for a broad range of riding scenarios, while the ignition system is a digitally controlled CDI system that provides optimum timing at all engine speeds. The single exhaust is quiet thanks to the right side muffler with catalytic converter and O2 feedback system for cleaner exhaust emissions.

The motor mounts in a strong diamond-shaped steel tube frame that rides on front telescopic, oil-damped, coil spring forks with 4.7 inches of travel and a swing-arm type, oil-damped, dual-coil spring over shock rear suspension in the rear that provides 3.7 inches of travel. Chrome-lace spoke wheels, along with the headlight bucket, front suspension outer tube and polished crank side case, add to the Suzuki bike's overall retro flavor.

Tires are tube-type 18 inchers fore and aft, and braking is handled by a hydraulic single disc with a dual-piston caliper up front and a rear drum. The wheelbase of the TU250X measures 54.1 inches, while the overall length is a manageable 81.5 inches. The fuel supply is contained in a traditionally styled, 3.2-gallon tank that allows for an extended riding range given the engine's level of efficiency.

My test bike was finished in Metallic Red, with a red and white, egg-shaped pattern stripes and a fogged black field. The base price was set at an affordable $3,799; figure roughly another $200 for dealer prep and handling.

The low 30.3-inch single seat height with room for two, and compact chassis format ensure easy maneuverability and control. Foot pegs are provided for both rider and passenger, and there is a hand strap for the passenger's comfort.

The TU250X features a full lighting system and easy-to-read instrumentation covering essential information, such as speedometer with odometer and a trip meter, as well as a neutral light. There is however no fuel gauge -- only a warning light -- and the directional signals are not self-canceling. A locking gas cap and fork lock are provided for security in addition to a 12 month unlimited warranty.

All in all, this entry level offering from Suzuki is a good and affordable place to start in working your way up to one of Suzuki's more advanced rides.
