Travel Tiny: Road Trip with Clara and Henry Ford

By Sue Mead, July 22nd, 2017

"Clara" is a tiny home, crossing the country in a summer-long road trip. Clara is the namesake of the wife of Henry Ford, the founder of Ford Motor Company, and this 252-square-foot tiny home is joined on the road trip by her partner "Henry," a 181-square-foot unit.

The pair of Recreation Vehicle Industry Association-certified homes is assisted by Ford in their summer travel plans. Ford is supplying two F-Series pickup trucks; a 2017 Ford F-150 tows Henry and an all-new 2017 F-250 Super Duty tows Clara.

Sporting a number of innovative features and amenities, Henry and Clara are a duo of unique accommodations in the Petite Retreats stable, joining a range of distinctive vacation rentals, including tiny houses, cozy cabins, yurts, teepees, and more, putting a twist on the typical destination-type vacation.

Henry is the smaller of the two, measuring 20 feet long and 8.5 feet wide, built in a log cabin style; it features one loft bedroom large enough to sleep two in a queen-sized bed, and with a kitchen, living room, dining room, and bathroom complete with shower. Clara is built in a Cape Cod style, measuring 8.5 feet wide and 26 feet long, and featuring two queen-sized bedrooms. Henry and Clara may be tiny, but they still weigh in at more than 9,000 pounds and 12,000 pounds, respectively.

This twosome of tiny houses travels across the United States, hook up to standard RV power and water, and both are road legal. An added benefit is that drivers don't need a commercial drivers license to tow them.

"We are honored Petite Retreats selected F-Series to tow these cutting-edge tiny houses," said Todd Eckert, Ford truck group marketing manager. "With Super Duty's best-in-class 925 lb.-ft. of torque and up to 32,500 pounds of towing, plus F-150 with its segment-first 10-speed automatic transmission mated to an all-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine that helps deliver best-in-class EPA-estimated gas fuel efficiency, F-Series trucks own towing."

For even more F-Series towing innovation, class-leading features like Trailer Reverse Guidance and an exclusive 360-degree camera system with trailer view can make hauling even a house easy. Moreover, F-150's available class-exclusive Pro Trailer Backup Assist makes the challenge of backing up a trailer as easy as turning a knob.

Petite Retreats is associated with Encore RV resorts and Thousand Trails campgrounds, with more than 180 locations across North America. Encore, Thousand Trails, and their affiliates offer RV and outdoor recreation enthusiasts opportunities to enjoy the outdoors in top vacation destinations, complemented with resort-style amenities and unique accommodations.

Tiny homes have become quite the rage recently, popping up as a way to simplify your life, live off the grid, and get back to nature without having to spend too much money. According to Photosynthetic, "The typical American home is around 2,600 square feet, whereas the typical small or tiny house is between 100 and 400 square feet. Tiny houses come in all shapes, sizes, and forms, but they enable simpler living in a smaller, more efficient space." Most tiny homes feature real appliances, including a propane stove, compact refrigerator, tankless water heater, and a composting toilet.
