2019 Toyota Tundra: Off-Road Trucking

By Tim Spell, April 6th, 2019

Toyota offers consumers wanting off-road performance and macho looks a variety of ways to achieve their goals with the 2019 Tundra pickup.

The lineup addresses off-road capability with a high-end TRD Pro model and TRD Off-Road Package option, and provides styling enhancements with special-edition packages. Answering the demands of off-road enthusiasts, Toyota summoned its racing and off-road heritage to engineer the TRD Pro series back in 2014.

The 2019 Tundra TRD Pro is back in the lineup after a year hiatus, base priced at $49,475. It's only available in the CrewMax configuration, and features a new rugged suspension, off-road accessories and colors.

The flagship off-roader rides on 2.5-inch aluminum-bodied Fox Internal Bypass shocks, specifically tuned by Toyota Racing Development engineers, said Jack Hollis, Toyota Division general manager. "These are not simply off-the-shelf parts. These are tailor-made."

Tundra TRD Pro is fitted with 2.5-inch front Fox shocks with 46-millimeter pistons and 11 bypass zones. TRD-tuned front springs provide 2 inches of lift and contribute to an extra 1.5-plus inches of wheel travel. The 2.5-inch rear Fox shocks have 12 bypass zones and feature 2.5-inch piggyback reservoirs. TRD Pro's rear wheel travel gets a 2-plus-inch boost.

The advantage of the Fox long-travel performance shock design is the ability to adjust to a range of driving conditions. "The shocks' internal bypass allows us to precisely tune the damping," said Hollis, "which means guests get a comfortable ride on their commute, and an incredible capability on the roads, on the trail and in the rocks."

Adding to the Tundra TRD Pro's off-road prowess are 18-inch satin-black five-spoke forged-aluminum wheels. Toyota reports the design improves handling and ride quality via a reduction in un-sprung weight of 3.35 pounds per wheel. Wrapping the wheels are Michelin P275/65R-18 tires. Helping to prevent off-road obstacles from scraping the underside is an upgraded front quarter-inch-thick skid plate, emblazoned with large red "TRD" lettering.

"TRD PRO" is stamped into the bed sides and exterior badging is black. Tundra TRD Pro exterior paint is available in three colors: Super White, Midnight Black Metallic and TRD Pro-exclusive Voodoo Blue.

For most off-roaders, an SR5 or Limited 4x4 model upgraded with the TRD Off-Road Package provides ample capability. An SR5 Double Cab 4x4 equipped with the 5.7-liter V-8, TRD Off-Road Package and standard 6.5-foot box starts at $41,375. A Limited Double Cab 4x4 with the V-8, off-road package and standard box starts at $43,835. No additional investment is required to add the package to a 1794 Edition CrewMax 4x4, which has a $50,530 base price.

Tundras with the TRD Off-Road Package roll on 18-inch split-five-spoke alloy wheels and P275/65R-18 tires. The package also includes "trail-tuned" monotube Bilstein shocks, and skid plates shielding the engine and fuel tank. "TRD OFF ROAD" adorns rear quarter panels, and floor mats wear the TRD Off-Road emblem.

The package upgrades SR5 models with LED headlights and fog lights. Limited models are fitted with heated power outside tow mirrors featuring integrated blind-spot monitors, turn-signal indicators and manual extend-and-fold feature.

Toyota's 4WDemand 4WD with electronically controlled transfer case and automatic limited-slip differential is available with 4.6- and 5.7-liter V-8 engines, which are both paired with the six-speed automatic transmission. The 4.6-liter delivers 310 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 327 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,400 rpm. The 5.7-liter generates 381 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 401 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,600 rpm. Maximum towing for a Tundra 4x4 V-8 is 9,900 pounds. Estimated fuel economy is 14 miles per gallon city and 18 mpg highway.

Toyota furthers the ability for consumers to choose the degree of off-road appearance and capability with other special packages that vary with regions. For instance, truckers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas are offered the Truck Sport Series Off-Road Special Edition Package.

This TSS Off-Road package is a $4,995 option that pumps up SR and SR5 appearances with a Black (SR's only choice) or Graphite theme. It's offered with either the 4.6- or 5.7-liter V-8 and in 4x2 or 4x4 configurations.

The TSS Black package combines an aggressive off-road attitude and street styling. It upgrades factory wheels and tires with 20-inch milled matte-black wheels and all-terrain tires. The theme continues with 5-inch black oval tube steps, black exhaust tip and matte-black badge overlays.

The TSS Graphite package gives the exterior a visual pop with 20-inch milled gloss-graphite wheels with all-terrain tires, chrome oval tube steps and stainless-steel exhaust tip. Both packages include TSS Off-Road bed-side decals and all-weather floor mats.

An a la carte accessories approach from the factory list is a cost-efficient way to give a Tundra SR or SR5 an off-road or street look. Highlighting the options list are: 18-inch six-split-spoke alloy wheels, $999; 5-inch oval tube steps, $609 (black) and $690 (chrome); body-colored pocketed fender flares with stainless-steel hardware, $675; and polished stainless-steel oval exhaust tip, $99.

If spending near $50,000 for a Tundra TRD Pro isn't in the budget, a $34,295 SR Double Cab 4x4 with the 4.6-liter V-8 and desired accessories offers looks and trail capability to satisfy a practical trucker's needs.
