Not an uncommon occurrence, Mercedes-Benz has once again seemed to set the standard in safety, comfort and advanced technology with the 2010 E-Class.
The 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is available in a stylish coupe and a luxurious sedan. The sedan version benefits from enhancements that improve upon the already exemplary long-distance comfort level through advancements that include: intelligent body shell technology with up to 30 percent greater stiffness, newly designed seats that have been made more comfortable and a newly developed suspension system with shock absorbers that automatically adjust to varying driving scenarios.
Two gasoline engines serve to power both body styles, along with a 50-state approved 3.0-liter BlueTEC diesel, which is claimed to be the world's cleanest diesel engine.
The gas engines are a 268 horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 found in the E350 and a 5.5-liter V-8 in the E550 that delivers 382 horsepower with 391 lb.-ft. of torque. Both gasoline engine variants are coupled to a 7-speed driver-adaptive automatic transmission.
My test 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class was the E550 five-passenger sedan wearing an exterior finish of Palladium Silver metallic, with the interior done in Natural Beige leather and Black with Black Ash polished wood trim.
The base price was set at $56,300 while selected options elevated the final sticker to $69,625. The extra cost options included: the metallic exterior paint, Parktronic, split-folding rear seats, Driver Dynamic Multi-contour seat with massage, the Premium Package, Sport Package and Driver Assistance Package (all three special packages contained extensive additional features).
The four "eyes" of the acclaimed twin-headlamp face have now been completely reinterpreted, reflecting geometric cubism forms. The new lights resemble gemstones precision cut from the fenders. The radiator grille, with a three-dimensional chromed surround, bold arrow-shape and steep angle, underlines the car's premium luxury positioning, with the interplay between lines and surfaces remaining one of the hallmarks of current Mercedes design language.
Large concave or convex surface areas are structured by taut, clearly defined lines, with the contours along the flanks becoming connecting elements influencing the overall body design. This harmonious flow culminates at the rear in a new feature: a sweeping line that stretches over the rear wheel arches, lending a clear movement to the muscular rear fender form.
The interior design of this latest E-Class is as equally appealing and well thought out as the exterior, with attention to detail and old-world craftsmanship coupled with a myriad of choices in color and materials to enhance the ambience.
The 2010 E-Class sedan not only provides Mercedes customers with a choice of engines and suspension variants, but also makes available, Sport and Luxury model lines, 10 exterior paint finishes, eight seat upholstery color combinations and a preference of either Burl Walnut or Black Walnut interior trim accents, complemented by standard ambient lighting. Additionally, there are several Equipment packages for further customer personalization.
The performance of the new 2010 E550 sedan is stellar; acceleration is far more than adequate, while ride quality and handling characteristics rival many competitive sedans.
It is extremely attractive and once we've factored in all of the state-of-the-art technology present in the E-Class, it is clearly a worthy new addition to the Mercedes-Benz stable of fine automobiles.
