2015 Buick Regal: A Royal Sedan

By Sue Mead, April 18th, 2015

There are two main types of luxury sedan buyers: Those who will happily pay extra for a badge that will make the neighbors suffer envy. Others could care less about impressing anyone; what they care about is getting the best features, quality, and performance for their dollar.

If you're one of the latter, then the new 2015 Buick Regal, starting at $29,840, may be just the right premium car for you.

The new 2015 Regal is a recipient of Kelley Blue Book's Brand Image Awards and the first domestic automaker to make the Top 10 in Consumer Reports Annual Car Brands Report Card, displacing the BMW 328i as the best Sports Sedan. Regal also competes with premium sedans from Acura, Volkswagen, Volvo, Lexus, Audi, and Infiniti.

The 2015 Regal wears the face of contemporary Buick, with cues that reinforce its low, wide proportion and convey a premium ambience through technology. Available LED daytime running lamps form a distinctive wing profile above the headlamps and are meant to give the Regal an unmistakable signature on the road.

At the rear, LED wing-shaped taillamps give the four-door sedan a sharp and modern look, while a chrome accent bridges the taillamps to further enhance Regal's wide stance.

The Regal comes with a choice of two efficient engines: the standard 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine rated at 259 horsepower gets 21 miles per gallon city, 30 mpg highway. A 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with eAssist light electrification technology is rated at 182 horsepower and 25 mpg city, 36 mpg highway.

The Regal's Haldex all-wheel-drive system (available with the 2.0L turbo engine) is engineered to improve handling and stability in all driving conditions, including inclement weather and on dirt roads. A slick-shifting six-speed automatic with driver shift control is standard on all trims. Buyers who upgrade to the sporty GS trim get the choice of a six-speed manual, as well, at no additional cost -- making it one of the few vehicles in the segment to offer a turbocharged engine with a manual transmission.

We drove the new model recently to evaluate its overall handling and specifically to test out its AWD system, finding it well-mannered, with high marks for traction on snow-and-ice-covered roads. One of our favorite attributes is the quietness in the well-appointed cabin on all versions.

Inside is a well-sculpted interior that blends aesthetics and refinement with the latest technologies. The dashboard's center stack is designed around the system's 8-inch color touchscreen, which utilizes Buick's next-generation IntelliLink infotainment system; it's designed for easy operation with intuitive controls and smartphone-influenced swipe recognition for easier navigation.

The center stack is also home to the dual-zone climate controls which, like the IntelliLink screen, feature capacitive-touch operation -- and are framed in tasteful chrome accents. A high-resolution, 4.2-inch color display is the focal point of the instrument cluster, providing vehicle information, navigation, audio system functions, phone features, and more to the driver, without removing one's eyes from the road.

The newest Regal gets greater connectivity to complements today's lifestyles that are more connected than ever. All models come equipped with OnStar and a standard built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, as well as Buick's IntelliLink multimedia interface system, equipped with helpful features like Text Messaging Alerts and Siri Eyes Free technologies.
