Audi A7: All-New for 2019

By Arv Voss, January 19th, 2019

The all-new 2019 Audi A7 brings the best of three worlds: sedan, sportback, coupe. These characteristics underscore the new A7's sportiness. Audi A7 blends the appeal of a coupe with the luxury and prestige of a sedan, with the functionality and versatility normally found in a wagon.

-- POWER

The A7 sits atop a lightweight chassis powered by a newly developed, highly efficient 3.0-liter 24-valve turbocharged V-6 engine with a 48-volt mild hybrid electric vehicle system with energy recuperation.

The system's combined horsepower is rated at 335 in a range from 5,000 to 6,400 rpm; torque is rated at 369 lb.-ft. from 1,370 to 4,500 rpm. Energy is transmitted from the longitudinally mounted front engine to the quattro AWD system with ultra technology that optimizes performance and efficiency via a seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission.

-- EXTERIOR STYLING UNIQUE

The A7's roofline is low, with integrated rear doors projecting a coupe-like silhouette, frameless door windows, and side mirrors further enhancing the coupe-like form; while the "C"-pillar stretches rearward and flows into the shoulder character line. Audi's signature Singleframe grille is contoured at the hood's leading edge, featuring a chrome surround framing the high-gloss black lattices. An integrated rear spoiler automatically deploys at 80 mph and retracts at 50 mph -- and it may also be deployed manually.

-- COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE

The ambience is heightened by rich chrome air vent bezels, with aluminum trim accents highlighting the optional layered-wood veneers, along with the height-adjustable-and-telescoping four-spoke steering wheel. The rear hatch provides a height-adjustable power-lift system. The cargo area is 24.5 cubic feet in its base form.

The safety inventory of the 2019 A7 reaffirms Audi's commitment to safety. Audi's Multi-Media-Interface provides the ultimate in connectivity via an 8-inch screen that emerges from the dash.

-- AS TESTED

My test 2019 Audi A7 came with the Prestige S line features and sported a rich Dakota Gray metallic exterior finish, complemented by a Velvet Beige interior with dark carpet. The base price was set at $68,000 while options and the destination charge racked up a final total price of $85,240.

-- PERFORMANCE

The A7 is a technological marvel with Audi connect, which delivers real-time driver relevant information into the vehicle, such as the Google Earth navigation with voice recognition, Google Local Search and in vehicle Wi-Fi connectivity for up to eight devices.

The seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission blends with Audi Drive select, incorporating the automatic gearbox, power steering, and engine to modify shift points, steering boost, and throttle characteristics via four modes: comfort, auto, dynamic, and individual.

In terms of acceleration, the A7 moves as if it were powered by a V-8, with smooth gear changes from the seven-speed transmission. Handling is crisp and sporty, and the ride is firm but comfortable and not harsh at all.

-- FINAL TAKE

Bottom line, if you're a luxury car shopper, then you owe it to yourself to give the A7 a drive. It would be a delight to own with its unique and attractive coupe-like looks, and its added versatility and functionality.

Honda CR-V: Refreshed for 2020

The 2020 CR-V is a spacious and versatile family hauler from Honda, long known for its reliability, safety and fuel efficiency. The new CR-V loses a base engine and is left with one power plant for 2020: a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that promises to take you 34 miles down the highway on a single gallon of gasoline.

Ford Mustang: The 2020 Fastback EcoBoost Coupe

It's no secret the Mustang has been extremely popular since the first pony car made its debut in the mid-1960s. I've never owned one, and never really felt moved to own one. But test-driving the 2020 Ford Mustang 2.3-liter EcoBoost Premium coupe awakened me. It's a two-door fastback that seats four in a 2+2 RWD configuration.

2020 Sienna: Trusty Old School Minivan

Toyota's family hauler is worthy of its namesake, "Siena," the medieval city in Tuscany, Italy. Siena is known for its sturdy, Gothic brick buildings and historic districts. At 23 years old, the Toyota Sienna is ancient by minivan standards and is holding up well, despite declining sales and the dominance of light trucks and sport utility vehicles.
